What is affiliate marketing?
People who search for ways to make money online will inevitably come across affiliate marketing. This means that you effectively promote somebody else’s products in return for a commission whenever they make a sale thanks to you.
You achieve this by getting people to click on a link that you have provided, which takes them to the offer. Effectively, therefore, being an affiliate marketer is the same as being an online salesperson.
Affiliate marketing at its very core is about relationships, a relationship between three parties: advertiser, publisher, consumer.
So far so good. Now, just as with regular sales, not everybody is right for this type of work.
You have to have the ‘gift of the gab’, the ability to convince people to make a purchase, but in a subtle way. And you have to be able to deal with the huge competition that is out there as well.
So is it right for you? If you are a good salesperson, wouldn’t it be easier to just sell your own product on sites like eBay for instance? Or couldn’t you become a trainer? There are thousands of ways to make money online using your own skills set, yet people always come back to affiliate marketing.
Why It’s All About Affiliate Marketing
One of the reasons why affiliate marketing is so incredibly popular is because it is, by and large an easy way to make money.
Affiliate marketing is an excellent way to generate an income from online advertising, regardless of the size of your business. It has been growing in stature and is highly regarded by key advertisers from large blue chip companies to SMEs.
That is not to say that you don’t have to work hard, of course. However, you don’t have to deal with complaints, payment issues, queries or anything else of the sorts. All you do is push people towards a product or service and get paid for it.
How Does It Work?
So if it is all so easy, how is it done? This is where your salesperson’s skills need to come in.
There are many ways for you to close a deal, and you need to find those that you are most comfortable with. Consider blogging, social networking, pay per click advertisements, and so on. None are free, however. You will always have to spend money and/or time.
A bigger difficulty is probably in deciding which product to affiliate. Interestingly, this is where it goes wrong for most people.
Most affiliate marketers today are facing the problem of not knowing which particular affiliate products to promote due to the fact that there are lots of niche affiliate programs to choose from.
Amazon is, by far, the most popular affiliate program out there.
However, you will be competing against hundreds of thousands of other marketers from all over the world. It is actually recommended to start with something smaller and something that is in demand but not quite as competitive.
The Potential For Earnings
Unfortunately, you will also need a bit of reality check.
While you can make money with affiliate marketing if you do it right, it is not a get rich quick scheme.
In fact, it isn’t even a ‘get rich’ scheme. Only 2% of active affiliate marketers today could say that they have actually become rich through it.
The main reason for this is because people don’t spend enough time understanding what affiliate marketing is. They don’t choose their products wisely, instead signing up with anything they can find and not having the time to give each item their individual attention.
They don’t take into consideration what it really means to be an affiliate marketer and how much time they will have to spend working.
So Is It Right For You?
The big question is whether or not you should consider affiliate marketing. Only you can answer that, but there are a few questions to ask yourself to help you decide.
Firstly, is there a product you want to affiliate?
Would you be proud and comfortable to talk about this product with others?
Would you actually recommend the product for yourself?
Could you be involved in this for a long time?
Are you genuinely interested?
Can you really make money from it?
